Physics Quiz 3: Heat and Temperature
Learn how temperature is measured, how heat moves, and why materials expand when heated.
Explore Thermal Physics
Welcome to Pak Navy FMT Physics Quiz 3. This lesson covers heat, temperature, thermal expansion, heat transfer, and specific heat capacity. These concepts help explain everyday phenomena, from warming water to the expansion of railway tracks in hot weather.
Although heat and temperature are related, they do not mean the same thing. Temperature describes the thermal state of a substance, while heat is energy transferred because of a temperature difference.
Topics to Review
- Difference between heat and temperature
- Celsius and Kelvin scales
- Conduction, convection, and radiation
- Thermal expansion
- Specific heat capacity
Heat Versus Temperature
Temperature indicates how hot or cold something is and is related to the average microscopic kinetic energy of its particles. Its SI unit is the kelvin (K).
Heat is energy transferred from one body to another because of a temperature difference. It is measured in joules (J).
Heat
Energy transferred due to a temperature difference.
Temperature
A measure describing the thermal state of a substance.
Three Methods of Heat Transfer
1. Conduction
Heat transfer through a material without the material as a whole flowing from place to place. It is especially important in solids.
Example: A metal spoon becomes warm when one end is placed in hot water.
2. Convection
Heat transfer through the bulk movement of a fluid, such as a liquid or gas.
Example: Circulation in water as it heats in a pot.
3. Radiation
Energy transfer by electromagnetic waves. Radiation does not require a material medium.
Example: Energy from the Sun reaching Earth.
Thermal Expansion
Many substances expand when their temperature increases because the average separation between their particles changes. The amount of expansion depends on the material and the temperature change.
Expansion is considered when designing bridges, railway tracks, and other structures exposed to changing temperatures.
Specific Heat Capacity
Specific heat capacity is the energy required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of a substance by one kelvin, without a change of state.
Q = mcΔT
Q = heat energy, m = mass, c = specific heat capacity, and ΔT = temperature change.
Preparation Advice
Learn the difference between heat and temperature first. Next, practise identifying the three methods of heat transfer from everyday examples. For numerical questions, understand what each symbol in Q = mcΔT represents before substituting values.
Revision Checklist
- Remember the SI units of heat and temperature.
- Distinguish conduction, convection, and radiation.
- Understand thermal expansion.
- Review the specific heat capacity formula.
